Shaun joined ICMIF in 1995 and was appointed Chief Executive in 2005. He has overseen the growth of the organisation from 65 members in 1995 to 210 members in 60 countries today as well as significantly increasing the influence of ICMIF and its members globally. The mutual sector represents 27% of the global insurance market with USD 1.5 trillion in premiums and assets in-excess of USD 10 trillion. The mutual industry has 1 billion policyholders. Shaun stepped down as CEO after nearly 20 years and since January 2025 is a part time advisor to ICMIF.

Shaun has been involved with the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda since 2012. He spoke about responsible investing at the UN General Assembly in 2014. At the Assembly, industry commitments were made prior to three Global UN agreements being established in 2015. These included the UNDRR Sendai Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) launch in September and culminated in the Paris Climate Change Agreement in December 2015 at COP21 with Shaun speaking at each of these events. He sits on a B20 taskforce and is a founding Board member of the Insurance Development Forum (IDF) a unique PPP between industry leaders and Civil Society.

Shaun continues to drive the partnership that ICMIF has with the UNDRR. He and his team have developed the ICMIF/UNDRR Resiliency Benchmark which quantifies the performance of the insurers utilising the Seven mechanisms that ICMIF and the UNDRR team developed in 2021. He co-chaired the DRR working Group of the IDF for 3 years. He continues to drive Impact and real action in the DRR arena for insurers in both the Investment and liability sides of the business. He is part of the newly formed Investment Advisory Board convened by the UNDRR.

Shaun sits on the Board of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) where he is Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and is driving the new initiative called the CM50 which brings together over 50 CEOs from leading mutual and cooperative businesses in order to maximise the UN International year of Cooperative in 2025.

Shaun is also the Chair of Coop Exchange a fintech start up that provides a platform for mutual and cooperative business to raise capital and trade in sustainable investments in the sector. Shaun is currently a member of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Insurance taskforce that is updating the financial services specific guidance on sustainability and impact reporting being launched in 2025.
